About Us
The Former Worker Medical Screening Program (FWP) was established following the issuance of the 1993 Defense Authorization Act (PL 102-484, Section 3162), which called for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to provide medical screening services to former employees who may be at-risk for health conditions as a result of exposure to hazardous or radioactive substances during their employment at DOE facilities.
In 2000, the DOE contracted with The University of Iowa College of Public Health to coordinate a FWP medical screenings for a DOE site in Iowa: The Burlington Atomic Energy Commission Plant (BAECP) at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (IAAP) near Burlington, Iowa.
In 2005, the DOE again contracted with The University of Iowa to begin FWP medical screenings for another DOE site in Iowa, the Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
